Kinetic Moves from Point-to-Point Complexity to a Connected Platform

Business Overview

Kinetic is a globally recognised transport network operating across Australasia, the UK, Europe & Asia, providing public transport services to millions. Kinetic’s network includes 12,000+ buses, 36,000+ people and 200 depots.

Through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions, Kinetic had brought together 10+ operating companies. With that growth came a diverse technology landscape, comprising legacy systems, different integration approaches and a broad range of business applications.

As Kinetic looked towards its next phase of global growth, it recognised that its operating models and their technology landscape must be fit-for-purpose for these ambitions. This became the catalyst for Fit 4 Future Growth (F4FG), a major business transformation programme.

Simplifying a Complex Integration Landscape

Years of growth had resulted in an increasingly complex application landscape.

Many systems were connected through a combination of manual processes and point-to-point connections, each implemented independently to solve an immediate business need. As Kinetic continued to grow and acquire new businesses, maintaining this approach would only add further complexity to an already diverse technology environment.

This became particularly important as Kinetic prepared to modernise three of the core systems that run its business: human resources, asset management and finance. Continuing to connect these platforms through manual processes or bespoke point-to-point integrations would only increase costs, vendor dependency, complexity and technical debt. Instead, F4FG presented an opportunity to establish a simpler and more consistent approach to integration. To achieve this, the organisation needed an integration platform, and the right architecture, that could enable scalable, secure, and reusable integrations across the groups’ systems, supporting operational efficiency, digital transformation, and future growth.

Building the right integration foundation

To support these efforts, Kinetic engaged Adaptiv to assess its existing landscape and identify the platform and architecture best suited to its long-term technology strategy.

The engagement began with a comprehensive platform assessment, evaluating multiple technologies against Kinetic’s technical, operational and commercial requirements. This assessment considered integration patterns, connectivity requirements, governance, security, scalability and total cost of ownership. Following the evaluation, Kinetic selected Boomi as the platform that best met its objectives.

Establishing the Integration Foundation with a Hybrid Landing Zone

With the platform selected, Adaptiv established Kinetic’s enterprise integration capability by designing and implementing a secure Azure-based integration landing zone, hosting Boomi runtimes on Azure Kubernetes Service and leveraging Azure API Management for API gateway capabilities and Azure Service Bus for enterprise messaging.

By leveraging the strengths of both Boomi and Azure, the solution brought API management, messaging and integration services together within a single architecture.

“This approach provided Kinetic with a well-governed integration environment that improved security, delivered reliable performance and simplified the ongoing management of integrations” George Phillips, Integration Architect at Adaptiv.

Rather than becoming another standalone technology project, the landing zone created an integration capability that future transformation initiatives could build on. It introduced standardised integration patterns, reusable components and shared platform services designed to support Kinetic’s transformation roadmap.

This gives new systems a consistent way to connect into the enterprise environment, without unnecessary complexity or bespoke development.

Delivering with Confidence

Despite the complexity of delivering a hybrid integration architecture across multiple technologies and stakeholders, the project was completed on schedule and within budget.

Kinetic now has an integration capability that will underpin its digital transformation and support the first major implementation programme already underway. With Adaptiv continuing as its integration partner, Kinetic has a scalable platform foundation that can support future systems, reduce bespoke development and enable a more consistent approach to enterprise integration.

“With the integration capability now in place, Kinetic is well positioned to continue modernising its technology landscape, connecting their new business systems through a consistent, reusable approach that will support transformation for years to come…and we’re proud to be behind this journey,” Nikolai Blackie, CTO of Adaptiv.
