Building the Digital Backbone for Tasmania’s Largest Vocational Education Provider

A transformation in the making

TasTAFE is Tasmania’s leading vocational education and training provider, delivering more than 200 courses across 16 campuses and training facilities statewide. With over 20,000 student enrolments and more than 900 teaching and administrative staff, having the right technology foundations in place is critical to supporting TasTAFE’s students, staff, and future growth.

As TasTAFE finalised its 10-year strategic vision, ‘Imagine 2025–2035’, and its commitment to becoming a future-focused, market-aligned education provider, the organisation began laying the foundations for a broader digital transformation. This included replacing its legacy Student Management System, developing a virtual campus experience, and upgrading network infrastructure.

Underpinning this transformation was the need for a secure and scalable integration platform capable of supporting TasTAFE’s digital uplift plans. To support this, TasTAFE engaged Adaptiv as its chosen integration partner.

Designing a Modern Integration Foundation

Adaptiv commenced the engagement with a comprehensive assessment to evaluate TasTAFE’s current technology ecosystem, future-state architecture requirements, and long-term integration needs.

Following this process, TasTAFE selected Microsoft Azure as its preferred integration platform.

“With its secure, flexible, and scalable cloud and AI capabilities, combined with its consumption-based pricing model, Microsoft Azure is well positioned to support TasTafe’s long-term strategic vision” Nikolai Blackie, CTO at Adaptiv.

With the platform strategy established, the next step was to build a production-ready Azure Landing Zone. Adaptiv led the design, development, testing and deployment of the Azure Landing Zone into production. The Landing Zone now gives TasTAFE a modular foundation that makes it easier to roll out new integrations, onboard future workloads, and manage its environment with greater consistency and control.

Beyond delivery, Adaptiv also partnered closely with TasTAFE teams to onboard, train, and upskill staff in their newly established AIS platform, ensuring internal capability uplift.

Automating Identity and Employee Onboarding

In parallel to the broader transformation program, TasTAFE identified a significant opportunity to modernise and automate its employee onboarding and identity management processes.

Previously, onboarding new staff into TasTafe’s ecosystem was a manual and time-consuming process that often-delayed access to systems and increased workload on the IT Support Desk.

To address this, TasTAFE engaged Adaptiv to design a modern identity and onboarding solution using Azure Integration Services, Microsoft Entra and EmpowerHR.

“Adaptiv’s responsiveness and willingness to constructively challenge our architectural assumptions led to a much cleaner, more scalable result. You get direct access to the experts doing the work, making them an invaluable extension of our digital team” Scott Turnbull.

The proposed solution uses EmpowerHR as the central source of truth for staff onboarding, changes, and offboarding events. From there, employee information can be securely synchronised into Microsoft Entra and Active Directory, helping streamline account creation, updates, and access management.

“From a DevOps and operational perspective, the solution introduces a far more resilient and scalable identity management capability that reduces dependency on legacy systems and their IT Service Desk” says George Phillips, Architect / Consultant at Adaptiv.

Building a Platform for Continuous Transformation

The successful delivery of the Azure Landing Zone, together with the progress made across TasTAFE’s identity integration initiative, has reinforced confidence in both the platform strategy and the broader transformation roadmap.

With AIS now established, TasTAFE is well-positioned to accelerate future digital initiatives under its ‘Imagine 2025–2035’ strategy.

Adaptiv remains a trusted strategic delivery partner and is now supporting the next phase of TasTAFE’s transformation journey, delivering enterprise integration services across Student Management Systems (SMS), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and broader teaching, learning, and corporate platforms.
