Genesis Replaces 3 Legacy Systems in Just 4 Months with Adaptiv

Client Overview

Genesis Energy (Genesis) is an energy generator and retailer supplying electricity, natural gas and LPG to nearly 500,000 customers in New Zealand. The geographic spread and diverse range of generation assets enable the business to back up solar, wind and hydro generation across hours, days and months.

Letting go of legacy

Genesis’s existing Oracle Financial Management System (FMS) solution was approaching end of life. To support its plans, Genesis decided to modernise and consolidate its enterprise systems through a programme of work that would streamline related applications, improve efficiency, and enhance data integrity across the organisation.

“We were ready for change,” says Greg Garland, GM – Commercial Finance at Genesis. “We were struggling with limited data visibility, and our integrated reporting capabilities and operational efficiency were constrained by our old systems.”

Genesis selected Workday as its new ERP – replacing Oracle, Coupa, and FlexiPurchase.

Bringing it all together

The size and complexity of the project meant there were multiple vendors and partners, and many moving parts that needed to be carefully aligned to deliver a successful outcome.

Additionally, Genesis had an ambitious go-live deadline.

“We had a significant amount of work to do within just four months,” says Garland, “so we were working with very compressed timelines. On top of a tight deadline, the number of partners and volume of required integrations was significant. This, along with the complexity due to the number of systems and their vastly differing data structures, meant the pressure really was on.”

Genesis engaged Adaptiv as its primary Azure Integration Services (AIS) partner. Already a proven partner on previous projects, Adaptiv was asked to provide Genesis with the development and architecture resources needed to support the integrations to Workday.

Adaptiv’s role in the complex project encompassed delivering the integrations, including providing the architecture and development resources required to migrate and integrate the FMS, HR, and project management systems, and supporting all phases from design and build through to defect resolution. All of this, of course, needed to be done in alignment with Genesis’s architectural standards and governance.

To deliver operational efficiency, reduce complexity, and improve data integrity, Adaptiv would work with Genesis to consolidate its applications and processes, and enable integrated reporting and analytics to support scalable business operations.

A standout partnership

To maintain momentum despite the abbreviated deadline, Adaptiv helped Genesis meet the timeline by scaling their team and supporting after-hours and weekend delivery.

“Adaptiv really stood out in a couple of ways at this time,” says Garland. “First, there was how they worked, which was always above and beyond what we expected of them. They had very clear communications, excellent project management, and despite being under a lot of pressure they remained unfailingly calm and professional.

“Adaptiv always delivered exactly what they promised, when they promised. And they went out of their way to help – they remained calm and addressed challenges with a solution mindset.”

Low churn, high-impact

Garland is a veteran of many large implementations and has experienced first-hand the impact of employee churn in both internal and partner teams. Adaptiv, he says, was notable for maintaining the same team throughout the project.

“Adaptiv’s stability was really key,” says Garland. “With the compressed timeframes, we would have struggled to find the time to bring new people up to speed, let alone share all that institutional knowledge. Adaptiv had some impressive people on their team – in fact, our own team noted that all of their people were great to deal with.

“We also liked that they had a number of their people across multiple integrations. Given the connection between all our systems and how the integrations worked, that was really helpful. They could easily join the dots between one system and another.”

Swift action, streamlined SIT

Adaptiv had tight timeframes to design and develop the integrations before entering the System Integration Testing (SIT) phase. And Genesis had clear criteria for exiting SIT and then going live.

“We monitored the progress of all our integrations on a daily basis. This included the percentage completed, the number of errors, and more,” says Garland. “We couldn’t exit SIT until we were comfortable that we’d hit the agreed metrics within the pre-Christmas timeframe and could move to the next stage. We ended up with very few issues on the other side of Christmas – and those we did find were resolved rapidly.

“Adaptiv’s willingness to resolve issues quickly made a huge difference, especially given the impact on the systems that run our power stations and keep New Zealand’s lights on. They were lifesavers!”

Zero deadline dramas

The project started in June 2025 and went live on 2 February 2026.

In replacing three major legacy systems with a single platform, Genesis and its partners delivered a complex transformation against an ambitious timeline.

“At one point, the amount of development effort still ahead of us suggested the programme could extend several months beyond the planned 2 February go-live,” says Garland. “In the end, we compressed the work to stay on track with our go-live date. The quality of the people across the programme made the difference. Everyone focused on the critical priorities, and when we reached go-live, everything worked.

“Despite the scale and ambition of the programme, Adaptiv remained fully aligned and played a key role in delivering a successful outcome.”
