Client Overview

Rothbury Group is part of the Steadfast Group, the largest general insurance broker network and underwriting agency group in Australasia.

Operating in 25 locations New Zealand-wide and with over 405 team members, Rothbury Group owns a number of businesses – including NZ Underwriting Agencies Limited – that provide its clients with complementary insurance solutions.

The challenge of transformation

As Head of Architecture for Rothbury Group, Brendan McEnroe, is leading a major modernisation and transformation project for Rothbury – starting with NZ Underwriting Agencies (NZUA).

“The first transformation project is for NZUA,” says McEnroe. “When complete, this won’t just deliver integration, but completely replace our old technology stack – the whole underwriting system that we use for policy and insurance management. Additionally, we’re implementing a new ERP [TechnologyOne]. What we’re doing in the NZUA space is setting the precedent for wider adoption of new technologies and processes within the business as a whole.”

When it came to choosing an integration platform, McEnroe says they looked at vendors before partners.

“We conducted our own due diligence and modelling of the technology options, going directly to the suppliers for pricing. We purposely selected products that are configurable – ones we can customise (internally, where possible) without coding. We settled on MuleSoft as our integration platform, then went through a selection process for the right integration partner to implement and support it,” says McEnroe.

The business chose Adaptiv.

Given his significant prior experience in the integration space, McEnroe was familiar with both MuleSoft and Adaptiv and was confident they had chosen wisely. “Adaptiv is well regarded in the integration market as a stable and highly experienced partner.”

The project commenced in April 2025.

Replicable success

McEnroe’s goal throughout the project is to empower Rothbury to control its own destiny. To do this, he and Adaptiv have deliberately avoided building point-to-point integrations, even though it generates more upfront effort.

“Instead,” he explains, “we’re focusing on creating shared services and standardised data models – like canonical models – that sit above individual systems. This approach abstracts away system-specific complexity, so what we build once can be reused across the business. So, something developed for NZUA can be easily leveraged in other areas of Rothbury, rather than being rebuilt from scratch each time.”

And it’s worked, says McEnroe. “Over the course of the project, we’ve been able to accelerate how quickly we’ve achieved our goals and actually introduce improvements to the business sooner than expected.”

A good example of this is the rapid integration of Insurebot’s automated insurance-quoting software into Rothbury’s broker networks. Insurebot, an Australian technology provider that specialises in automating the insurance quoting process for brokers, was acquired by Steadfast Group shortly after the NZUA project started, with the goal of providing the service to Rothbury’s insurance brokers.

“Due to the common services approach we’d taken to integration,” says McEnroe, “we could accelerate the value of using MuleSoft within Rothbury. By reusing the work Adaptiv had already done with NZUA, they were able to launch Insurebot to Rothbury’s domestic brokers far more quickly than ever planned. Within hours (rather than days or weeks), we could offer not only an insurance policy quote but also a breakdown of the instalments. Insurebot is also integrated with Rothbury’s instalment services, adding even more value. In the first 24 hours of being live, it was used over 100 times.”

The working relationship

As an integration veteran, McEnroe places a high value on partner relationships.

“From a day-to-day perspective, I consider Adaptiv part of the team. They typify the close, respectful and collaborative relationship you’d have with someone who’s sitting at a desk next to yours, discussing and resolving issues to achieve the best outcomes.

“Adaptiv has taken a great approach to transferring knowledge and skills to us – enabling our team to do more. For example, we had an internal document management project we wanted to implement that needed to integrate with our policy management system. While our new developer had some MuleSoft training, it wasn’t enough, so Adaptiv provided support with best-practice approaches to managing the code.”

Throughout the engagement, McEnroe has championed a blended team of Adaptiv and Rothbury resources with one internal developer working alongside Adaptiv’s senior developer. “Embedding their team with ours enables us to achieve balance and self-reliance, while ensuring we always have help when we need it.”

“What Adaptiv’s done around the maturity of the path to go-live is really good. They’ve made sure we’ve got a robust approach from concept development through the integration platform to release and delivery. They’ve been fast, flexible and responsive.

“We’ve got a robust relationship where we can challenge one another and bounce ideas around to get the best outcome for the business – no matter where it comes from.”

What next?

McEnroe anticipates a busy time ahead for Rothbury and Adaptiv.

“Following the transformation of NZUA, we’ll move on to modernising Rothbury’s systems. The work Adaptiv has done so far for NZUA has mapped out best-practice integration patterns and approaches that our internal teams can follow and apply to Rothbury itself. This meets our objective of developing our own skills and capabilities – and controlling our own destiny.”

“There will be many future initiatives, particularly around automating the broker experience and leveraging AI. So, it’s ‘watch this space’ – there will be lots happening – and Adaptiv will be an integral part of it.”
